Hi

I think you pretty much answered how I did everything.. it was all rotoscoped.  I cut out the characters frame by frame using photoshop and then applied all kinds of color effects per frame.  I then placed them back into the timeline layered as such to give the whole effect of the colors and motion swirling about.
